Hurricane Irma came ashore at Cudjoe Key in September 2017, a few miles west of here, and the National Key Deer Refuge on Big Pine recorded a 106 mph gust. FEMA later put the toll across the Keys at a quarter of all homes destroyed and nearly two-thirds with major damage, concentrated in the stretch between Cudjoe Key and Marathon. Big Pine sits in the middle of that. What it left is rebuilt, elevated houses standing beside older ground-level ones, and an inspector working here needs to be as comfortable with an elevation certificate as with a four-point form. In Monroe County those documents often decide what a policy costs — or whether you can get one.
The roster here is small. Many inspectors covering Big Pine are based in Marathon or Key West, so ask about travel and scheduling before you book.
A carrier will usually ask for a 4-point inspection on an older home before it writes a policy, and a wind mitigation is what earns the storm-resistance discounts. Both are done by the same licensed inspectors listed above.
If your license is listed here, claiming it is free: your business name, phone, website and services on the listing, above every unclaimed inspector. A featured spot at the top of this page is $50 a month at the founding rate.
